History

Macintalkers was chartered on the Apple Computer campus on May 1, 1989.

Toastmasters International is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, who conceived and developed the idea of helping others to speak more effectively, established the first Toastmasters club on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California. More clubs were formed, and Toastmasters International was incorporated under California law on December 19, 1932.

Its World Headquarters, located in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, administers Toastmasters International’s business and services. It employs no paid promoters or instructors. It has no salaried staff except the Executive Director and World Headquarters staff, which provides services to the clubs and districts.

Mission

Toastmasters International’s mission is to make effective communication a worldwide reality.  This is based on the philosophy of the organization’s founder, Ralph, C. Smedley.

At Macintalkers, we share in that vision and promote that as part of our club values and membership.  Additionally, we have a mission to give back to Apple Computer and its employees.

Goals

In Macintalkers, we focus on three key areas for our membership:

  • Developing outstanding speakers:
This is the core of why we meet weekly.  We want to ensure that people who join our organization understand how to speak better.  Not only how to speak better, but also why they speak better.  Speakers learn from speaking as much as they do from listening and observing.  All of these areas are utilized at our meetings.
  • Building solid leaders:
Leading a group, whether it is a Fortune 500 company, or a local chapter of a national organization, requires the same types of skill sets.  The ability to create a vision, the tactical implementation of making that vision a reality, the people skills to bring a group together around a common cause and more are reasons why Macintalkers is a place to develop your Leadership skills.
  • Enhance meeting skills:
Ever been in a poorly run meeting?  Ever notice how much time is wasted in meetings?  At Macintalkers, we focus on running meetings with defined roles and understood timeframes.  Each member has the opportunity to learn how to use that structure.  As members advance in the Toastmasters program, they have the opportunity to apply these learnings to how they handle their meeting assignments. Additionally, each member takes what they learn in the meetings and can apply it their job.
